UOC hierarch attends Georgian PM’s meeting with church delegations
Metropolitan Sergiy of Ternopil attended a meeting between Georgia’s prime minister and the heads of Church delegations visiting for a symposium marking 1,700 years since Christianity became the state religion.
Metropolitan Sergiy of Ternopil and Kremenets, a hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), attended a meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the heads of Church delegations who had arrived for an international symposium marking the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity’s adoption as the state religion, UOJ-Georgia reports.
The UOC delegation traveled to Georgia at the invitation of the Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church and with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine. The delegation includes Metropolitan Sergiy, Archbishop Job of Shumsk, Archpriest Vasyl Vozniuk, and Deacon Maksym Savchuk.
The prime minister thanked the guests for their visit and emphasized the importance of their participation in the symposium. Discussions focused on the role of the Georgian Orthodox Church in preserving and strengthening the country’s spiritual values. The participants also acknowledged the longstanding contributions of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia. The current Primate of the Georgian Church, Catholicos-Patriarch Shio III of All Georgia, also attended the meeting.
The international symposium, titled “God, Fatherland, Man,” is being held in Tbilisi and brings together scholars, historians, theologians, and clergy from Georgia and abroad.
As the UOJ previously reported, the UOC delegation met with Patriarch Shio III in Georgia on October 12, 2026. According to Church tradition, the conversion of Georgia (ancient Iberia) to Christianity was preceded by the preaching of St. Nina, Equal-to-the-Apostles.
