First transgender bishop elected in U.S. Lutheran Church
Megan Rohrer, who does not identify as either male or female, has been elected bishop in one of the major Christian denominations in the United States.
On Saturday, May 8, the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) elected pastor and LGBT activist Megan Rohrer as bishop – the first transgender person to hold such a position, according to Kath.ch.
Rohrer identifies as transgender and uses they/them pronouns. They have served in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2006.
Megan Rohrer is also involved in LGBT activism, advocating for the right of transgender individuals to use public restrooms in accordance with their gender identity rather than their biological sex. The newly elected bishop also writes children’s books.
