Vance: Those who closed churches during the Cold War – were they good guys?
The U.S. Vice President criticized Europe for its tolerance of the persecution of Christians.
On February 14, 2025, during his speech at the Munich Conference, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized modern Europe for its tolerant attitude towards the persecution of Christians. Vance’s speech was published on the Munich Security Conference’s YouTube channel.
“In the living memory of many of you in this room, the Cold War positioned defenders of democracy against much more tyrannical forces on this continent. Consider the side in that fight that censored dissenters, that closed churches, that canceled elections. Were they the good guys? Certainly not. And thank God they lost the Cold War,” Vance stated.
He continued by saying that "they lost the Cold War because they neither valued nor respected all of the extraordinary blessings of liberty."
He pointed out that in the United Kingdom, the government charged Adam Smith-Connor, a 51-year-old physiotherapist and army veteran, with the “heinous crime” of standing 50 meters from an abortion clinic and silently praying for three minutes; not obstructing anyone, not interacting with anyone – just silently praying on his own."
He also noted that “just a few months ago, the Scottish government began distributing letters to citizens whose houses lay within so-called safe access zones, warning them that even private prayer within their own homes may amount to breaking the law.”
