Metropolitan Tychikos returns to Cyprus, ready to attend Holy Synod
Metropolitan Tychikos sent a letter to the Archbishop of Cyprus, stating that he is prepared to participate in the Synod despite his health condition.
On January 7, 2026, Metropolitan Tychikos of Paphos reported that he had returned to Cyprus and intends to take part in the meeting of the Holy Synod, having sent a corresponding letter to the Archbishop of Cyprus, UOJ in Greece reports.
In his message to the Archbishop, Metropolitan Tychikos noted that he had learned of the upcoming Synod meeting scheduled for January 8 – a meeting to which he had not been invited. In view of this, he decided to come to Cyprus in person.
“I was informed that on January 8 a meeting of the Synod will take place, to which I was not invited by you, as Chairman of the Holy Synod. Having learned of this, I arrived in Cyprus today precisely for this purpose,” the hierarch wrote in his letter.
Metropolitan Tychikos also said that, despite ongoing medical examinations, he considers it possible for him to participate in synodal work.
“Issues related to my health, and the corresponding examinations, are continuing, including repeat ones, the dates of which are not yet known,” he wrote, while emphasizing his readiness to be at the Synod’s disposal.
At the same time, according to UOJ in Greece, a decision in Metropolitan Tychikos’s case may have been made in advance, even before the meeting. The report concerns a possible long-term, effectively lifelong ban on serving.
It was previously reported that Metropolitan Tychikos intends to seek protection of his rights in the civil courts of the Republic of Cyprus. It is also known that he has met with a number of clergymen, including Fr. Antonios from the “Kivotos” organization and Fr. Evangelos Papanikolaou.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that Zelensky had invited the Archbishop of Cyprus to visit Ukraine.
