World Council of Churches calls for an end to the war in Ukraine

The General Secretary of the World Council of Churches called on all people of good will to pray and act for the establishment of lasting peace.

On June 2, 2026, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Pastor Jerry Pillay issued a condemnation of the continuing escalation of military conflict in Ukraine. The head of the organization called what is happening a "deadly cycle of violence" and called on the international community for immediate action to stop the loss of human life.

The WCC leader emphasized that the organization's member churches and all people of good will must not only pray, but also actively contribute to establishing peace. According to Pillay, achieving lasting peace in the region is only possible with compliance with international law and fundamental moral principles. "We call for an immediate end to this war to stop the death and destruction," Jerry Pillay stated.

The reason for the appeal was the tragic events on the night of June 2, when as a result of strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, about 18 people died and more than 100 were wounded. The WCC also drew attention to reports of a drone attack on a student dormitory in Luhansk region, which resulted in the death of 21 students.

As SPJ reported, the World Council of Churches called on the USA, Israel and Iran to return to dialogue
