The Lavra has already covered 70% of the roof of the damaged Assumption Cathedral
A commission has begun work to prepare a defect report and estimate for the installation of a conservation covering.
At present, specialists have completed the installation of an emergency covering over 70% of the damaged roof area of the Assumption Cathedral. The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine assures that these measures are necessary to protect the unique historical and artistic interior of the church from precipitation and further destruction. This was reported by «Ukrinform».
To assess the extent of the damage, a special commission has begun its work, comprising experts from the National University «Lviv Polytechnic», including Ihor Bokal, Mariana Kaplinska, and Mykhailo Volynets. Based on the results of their inspection, a defect report and estimate will be prepared for the construction of a full conservation covering.
First Deputy Minister of Culture Ivan Verbytskyi emphasized that the restoration of this UNESCO World Heritage shrine requires the combined efforts of the state, patrons, and international partners.
According to estimates by the reserve's Director General Maksym Ostapenko, the full restoration of the cathedral may take up to two years. Despite the ongoing works, the reserve is gradually restoring visitor access: the Near Caves, the Great Lavra Bell Tower, the Refectory Church, and the Church of the Saviour at Berestove are currently open to visitors. Group excursions have also been resumed.
