His Beatitude: Legalizing sin will not solve humanity's problems
The Primate of the UOC celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and spoke about the destructive consequences of legitimizing sin.
His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry celebrated the Divine Liturgy on the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, the feast of the Holy Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils, at the Church of St. Agapit of the Caves in the Kyiv–Pechersk Lavra and delivered a sermon to the faithful, the UOC Information and Education Department reports.
In his homily, the Primate addressed the global challenges facing humanity today. He noted that scientists warn of a dramatic increase in the world’s population alongside a decline in food supplies and fresh water resources. However, according to Metropolitan Onuphry, the modern world is attempting to solve these problems through measures that are themselves sinful.
“Sins that God forbids are being legalized: abortion, so that there will be fewer people; euthanasia, which is suicide; and same–sex marriages, from which children cannot be born,” Metropolitan Onuphry said.
He stressed that any attempt to “regulate” the size of the population through sin – including wars and uprisings – is unlawful and destructive for humanity.
His Beatitude explained that sin, by its very nature, destroys a person – either by immediately killing the soul or by gradually ruining life through illness and suffering.
“By adopting laws that God does not approve of, we are killing ourselves; we are condemning ourselves,” the Primate warned.
He reminded the faithful that the true solution to humanity’s problems lies not in sinful restrictions but in returning to God.
“When sin is addressed through sin, it does not eliminate sin – it multiplies it,” the Primate concluded.
He called on his flock to renounce earthly comfort and follow Christ even along the “narrow path.”
