His Beatitude: Legalizing sin will not solve humanity's problems
The Primate of the UOC celebrated the Liturgy at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and revealed the destructive nature of legalizing vices.
His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphrius presided over the Divine Liturgy on the 8th Sunday after Pentecost, the commemoration day of the Holy Fathers of the Six Ecumenical Councils, at the church of Venerable Agapitus of the Caves at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, and addressed the faithful with a sermon. This was reported by the Information and Educational Department of the UOC.
The archpastor touched upon the topic of global challenges that concern humanity today. He noted that scientists speak of a catastrophic growth in the world's population alongside a simultaneous reduction in food and fresh water supplies. However, according to the Primate, the modern world attempts to solve these problems through measures that constitute sin.
"Sins that God forbids are being legalized: abortions — so that there are fewer people; euthanasia — that is, suicide; same-sex marriages are being legalized, from which children cannot be born," stated Metropolitan Onuphrius. He emphasized that any attempts to "regulate" the number of people through sin, including wars and uprisings, are unlawful and destructive to humanity.
His Beatitude the hierarch explained that sin by its very nature kills a person — either instantly striking the soul, or gradually destroying life through illness and suffering. "By adopting laws that God does not approve of, we are killing ourselves, we are executing ourselves," the Primate warned. He reminded the faithful that the true solution to problems lies not in sinful restrictions, but in returning to God.
"When sin is resolved by means of sin, this is not the destruction of sin — it is the multiplication, the increase of sin," the Primate concluded. He called upon his flock to leave earthly comfort behind and follow Christ even along the "narrow path."
