Modern clinic to be built on Mt Athos for needs of monks and pilgrims
The project worth 3.4 million euros will be implemented on the territory of the Vatopedi Monastery at the expense of the Central Macedonia regional budget.
A new multifunctional medical center will be built on the Holy Mountain Athos. The modern facility will be constructed on the territory of the Vatopedi Monastery to provide quality medical care to its residents and pilgrims, reports Romfea.
The decision to fund the project in the amount of 3.4 million euros was signed by the Governor of Central Macedonia Athina Aidona. The funds will be allocated through the regional budget program. According to Aidona, the new clinic will become "an important legacy for the Athonite state," filling a serious gap in the field of healthcare.
"In cooperation with the Ministry of Health ... we are financing the construction of a new building within Athos to create the necessary public health unit, which will prove invaluable both for the monastic community and for the millions of visitors," the official emphasized.
The medical center building will be in full harmony with the unique architectural appearance and natural environment of the Holy Mountain. According to the project, the total area of the site is nearly 700 sq. m. The clinic will consist of two underground levels of 400 sq. m each and an above-ground wing of 150 sq. m. The 4th Regional Health District of Greece will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility.
The authorities emphasize that special materials complying with the strict construction regulations of the Athonite autonomy will be used during construction.
The UOJ previously reported that Greece allocated 5.3 million euros for the restoration of Athos monasteries.
