Religious Jews attack Armenian monastery in Jerusalem
Police detained six suspects following an attack on St. James Monastery in the Old City.
A group of radical Jews attacked the Armenian Monastery of St. James in Jerusalem, desecrating its entrance and pelting its walls with stones, The Times of Israel reports.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City. Six assailants – five minors and one adult – took turns spitting at and throwing stones at the gates of the monastery complex, which serves as the regional headquarters of the Armenian Church.
When a local resident attempted to film the incident, the radicals began throwing stones at her windows and shouting insults.
Jerusalem police officers located and detained all those involved in the attack. Three of the suspects were barred from entering the Old City for 15 days, while police petitioned the court to extend the detention of the others.
Representatives of the Armenian Patriarchate have already filed a formal complaint with the police over the vandalism and threats.
As the UOJ previously reported, Israeli settlers set fire to Christian homes in the ancient town of Taybeh.
