When superstition takes the place of faith

Ahead of Halloween, an amusing story about superstition, pseudo-spirituality, and why true protection from evil comes not from aspen crosses or silver bullets, but from faith and living according to the Gospel.

With Halloween approaching, a little story came to mind...

One day, I stopped by our church shop just as the woman working there needed to step out for a few minutes. Just then, a woman who didn't look particularly familiar with church life walked in and asked firmly, “Do you have any aspen crosses?”

Realizing where this was going, I replied with a perfectly straight face, “No, we're all out. We only have silver bullets left...”

You should have seen the parade of emotions scrolling across her face – astonishment, fear, curiosity, and then fear again. But none of those emotions made it into words. Instead, she nervously muttered, “No, thank you,” and hurried out of the shop.

What's my point?

Don't read all that pseudo-spiritual nonsense. Read the Gospel and try to live by it.

And the Almighty Lord will protect you from evil – no aspen crosses or silver bullets required.
