A mosque was opened in the medieval Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia in the Turkish province of Edirne, reports riafan.ru.

“After last year's opening of the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul, we are meeting again here to open the Enez-i-Sheriff Hagia Sophia Mosque,” said Ali Erbash, head of the Office of Religious Affairs.

The opening ceremony took place after the final reconstruction of the building.

The Church of Hagia Sophia of Ainos was built in the XII century, for the first time it was turned into a mosque in 1456. In 1965 it was destroyed by an earthquake.

As reported, in Turkey the conversion of Hagia Sofia into a mosque is considered the main event of the year.
