Mtskheta street named after late Patriarch Ilia II

Members of the Mtskheta Municipal Council renamed Military Street in honor of the late Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, making an exception to Georgia’s existing legislation. This was reported by UOJ in Georgia.

Under Georgian law, geographic features may be named after public figures only 20 years after their death. However, municipal deputies discussed the issue on April 15, and on July 14 received special approval from a government commission.

On August 31, 2026, the document was signed by acting council chairman Giorgi Kvakhadze. The resolution took effect immediately upon signing.

The street forms part of the historic Military Road running through the city. It is home to the district court, a medical center, banks, and other commercial institutions.

The authorities said the decision reflects deep respect for the late Primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church, his many years of service, and his historic contribution.
