Muslim pupils become largest group in Vienna schools
The share of Muslim pupils in Vienna schools has reached 41.2%, making them the largest religious group and surpassing Christian pupils.
On April 28, 2026, it emerged that the share of Muslim pupils in Vienna schools had exceeded 41%, becoming the largest of all religious groups, The European Conservative reports.
According to data from the office of Education Councillor Bettina Emmerling, Muslim pupils account for 41.2% of the total, compared with 39.4% a year earlier. They have thus become the largest religious group in Vienna’s schools.
By comparison, 34.5% of schoolchildren identify as Christians, including 17.5% Catholics and 14.5% Orthodox. Another 23% did not state a religious affiliation, while the rest belong to other faiths.
The changes are also said to be affecting the school environment. According to the Austrian Farmers’ Association, pork dishes are becoming increasingly rare in Vienna school cafeterias, and in some schools they have been removed from the menu altogether.
The association also noted that some pupils refuse even dishes labeled “pork-free,” doubting their contents. Its representatives called for dietary variety to be preserved and traditions respected, while ensuring freedom of choice for all pupils.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that rental ads “Muslims only” had appeared in London.
