Patriarch Bartholomew approves decision to canonize new saint
The Ecumenical Patriarch signed the sigillion on the canonization of St. Amphilochios of Patmos.
On June 29, 2026, Patriarch Bartholomew signed the official Patriarchal sigillion on the glorification of St. Amphilochios (Makris) of Patmos, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
The signing ceremony took place at the Patriarch's residence in Istanbul during an audience with the abbess of the Monastery of the Annunciation on Patmos, Hegumeness Christonymphi, and the sisters of the convent.
The representatives of the convent presented the head of the Patriarchate of Constantinople with an artistically crafted leather parchment, on which the text of the Patriarchal and Synodal act concerning the glorification of Elder Amphilochius had been inscribed. After being signed by the Patriarch, the document will be transferred for eternal preservation to the Monastery of the Annunciation.
St. Amphilochios of Patmos is recognized as one of the most significant spiritual figures of Orthodox Christianity in the 20th century. As abbot of the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos, he revived the tradition of spiritual fatherhood, engaged in extensive charitable work, and cared for the youth.
As the UOJ reported, the ROCOR Council of Bishops launced canonization for Seraphim (Rose).
