Romanian patriarch offers condolences following death of Patriarch Ilia
Romanian Patriarch Daniel sent condolences to the Synod of the Georgian Church and described Patriarch Ilia II as an outstanding hierarch of contemporary Orthodoxy.
On March 18, 2026, Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church expressed condolences following the death of Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia, according to the official website of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
In his message to the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the Romanian primate said: “It was with deep sorrow that we received the news of the repose of our beloved brother in Christ, the esteemed Ilia II, Patriarch of All Georgia.”
He said Patriarch Ilia II was “a venerable figure in contemporary Orthodoxy and a steadfast confessor of the faith, who wisely guided the Orthodox Church of Georgia both in times of trial and in times of renewal.”
“On behalf of the hierarchs, clergy, and faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church, we extend our condolences to the members of the Holy Synod and to the entire Orthodox Church of Georgia,” the message says.
Patriarch Daniel also added: “We pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is ‘the Resurrection and the Life,’ to grant rest to the soul of Patriarch Ilia II in the dwelling place of the saints, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting,” emphasizing that his memory would be preserved “from generation to generation.”
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Bulgarian primate had offered condolences following the death of Patriarch Ilia.
